中国早期市民社会是在与西方完全不同的历史背景下起步的，本书以苏州市民公社作为早期市民社会网络中的个案，力图通过对这只麻雀的解剖，再现中国早期现代化和市民社会发育的曲折历程。在前人建构市民社会的努力以及所遭遇到的失败中，可以发现只有建立在政府需求与社会需求结合点之上的中国市民社会才具有现实可能性。苏州早期市民社会的发展为建构、探索新时代的中国市民社会提供一面历史的镜子。
